If you’re a skincare junkie, clay masks are probably a key component in your beauty arsenal. After all, masking is instantly relaxing. Clay masks pair well with cooling eye cucumbers and make you feel like you’re taking care of yourself. And if you spend any time on your Instagram Explore page, you know you’re not the only one who feels this way. So, here’s the question: Are clay masks for everyone? And are all clay masks the same?
Not All Clay Masks are Created Equal
The short answer is no. And because we don’t say anything without backing it up (we’re just thorough like that), we tracked down two dermatologists to settle the score. The good news first: Clay masks can be great for your skin! According to New York City dermatologist Joshua Zeichner, MD, clay masks have skin-calming and oil-absorbing properties that help clear your pores –– making them a great option for babes with most skin types. However, those with dry and sensitive skin may want to hold off (especially if the mask contains additives). If you’re looking for specific products, try the SkinCeuticals Clarifying Clay Mask (it’s Dr. Josh approved!).
Don’t Over Mask
Clay masks are a great secondary cleansing method, says Dr. Rachel Nazarian of Schweiger Dermatology Group, and are typically gentle enough to use once a week. She recommends masks with charcoal such as the L’Oréal Paris Pure Clay Mask or one with calming ingredients like chamomile. Our personal fave? The I Dew Care Calming Calamine Clay Mask. If you want something that feels a little more fun, try a bubbling clay mask –– it’s Insta Story gold and leaves you looking glowy and fresh faced.
Have you tried a clay mask? If so, which one’s your fave?
